The Indian Constitution is the force that unites the people of India and we must do a lot to protect and study it, said Finance Minister KN Balagopal.
He was speaking at the district-level inauguration of ‘The Citizen’, a constitution literacy campaign jointly organized by the Kollam district panchayat, the district planning committee and the Institute of Administration Local Kerala (KILA), Wednesday.
The ambitious campaign implemented through the LSG aims to educate anyone over the age of 10 on the basic principles of the Constitution. More than seven lakh families in the district will receive lessons on the preamble of the Constitution, fundamental rights and legal remedies under the initiative.
The aim of the campaign is to declare Kollam a fully connoisseur district of the Constitution on August 14 at midnight. “We are witnessing a time when the values of the Constitution are being questioned. The campaign launched by the district administration will be another step towards strengthening the country,” Mr. Balagopal said.
The District Panchayat Chairman, Sam K. Daniel, presided over the ceremony while the Minister of Livestock and Dairy Development, J. Chinchu Rani released the sample preamble to be distributed as part of the campaign.
Mayor Prasanna Earnest introduced the Constitutional Values at the event and PC Vishnunath, MLA launched “The Citizen 2022” website. Mr. Noushad, MLA, and District Collector Afsana Parveen also spoke on the occasion. Approximately 3,000 people from various local agencies in the district received training to raise awareness about the Constitution. They will be in charge of raising awareness and running classes for units made up of 10 to 20 families. A cultural procession proceeded from the PWD Rest House to the C. Kesavan Memorial Town Hall was also held as part of the event.
