Crucial first win for Eagles 2023 AFCON qualifying campaign: Aribo

Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo said in Abuja on Thursday that it was crucial to start his 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign on a winning note.

First-half goals from Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen were the difference as the Super Eagles won 2-1 at Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

They fought back after Sierra Leone took a shocking lead in a display that was not the most convincing.

Aribo told reporters in a post-match briefing that their opening day win over Sierra Leone was important. He said it would help the team build momentum ahead of the remaining matches of the campaign.

“I think it’s very important that we get off to a winning start in our first game because we want to build momentum for the next game on Monday. So to start our campaign on the right foot and get the three points in our kitty was very crucial,” added the Glasgow Rangers player.

On the team’s unconvincing performance against the Leone Stars, Aribo noted that the team would improve with every game.

” We know each other. We could have played better, but I think we will improve as we play. It’s our first home game as a group under the new coach, but the team will improve as we continue to play together,” he explained. “We are working with new tactics and philosophies. So it’s a gradual process. We will definitely get better and stronger in the upcoming matches.

The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to their next game against Sao Tome and Principe in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday.
