Pitso Mosimane’s shock resignation as Al Ahly manager could have been the result of a campaign to see him expelled from the club, according to club president Mahmoud Al Khatib.

According ObjectiveAl-Khatib said:

“We were completely taken aback when he told us that he was physically and psychologically unable to continue as head coach of the team. We gave him 24 hours to reflect on his decision and after this period, he finally decided to separate from us. .

Last month, SchedulesLIVE reported that many Al Ahly fans were clamoring for the South African’s presence in the dugout after the Red Devils’ disastrous 2-0 defeat in the Egyptian Cup final to rivals Zamalek.

A few weeks ago, many took to social media to vent their frustration with new coach Ricardo Soares, while demanding the return of 57-year-old Mosimane.

He replied on Twitter:

@AhmedEissa my brother, please don’t regret my leaving. Al Ahly did not fire me or push me to leave. I have great respect for President Khatib and the entire board, including all supporters of Al Ahly. I will always cherish all of our trophy celebrations.”
