Philippines begin campaign with crucial win over Thailand


Philippines defeated Thailand 1-0 to get them AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 The Group B campaign got off to a flying start on Friday.

Chandler McDaniel scored the winner in the 81st minute as the Philippines bolstered their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals, while Thailand were left to regret their missed chances.

The Philippines, who entered the tie having failed to beat Thailand in 12 previous attempts, started with a front foot but quickly found themselves defending as the game wore on.

Thailand, winners of the 1983 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, came into action in the second minute when Saowalak Pengngam set up Miranda Nild, but the striker’s left-footed shot from inside of the surface has been deflected.

Orapin Waenngoen then tried his luck from long range on Phonphirun Philawan’s layoff, but his shot failed to test Philippines keeper Olivia Davies-McDaniel.

The Philippines thought they had taken the lead when Katrina Guillou smashed the ball into the back of the net against clearing play, but Thailand keeper Waraporn Boonsing breathed a sigh of relief after the goal was ruled out.

Feeling the game slipping away from them, Thailand increased the intensity of their attacks and nearly scored in the 14th minute when Nipawan Panyosuk forced a save from Davies-McDaniel.

The Philippines tried to force their way in the 35th minute with Tahnai Annis sending a cross to Quinley Quezada, whose 35-yard shot was stopped by Davies-McDaniel.

Both teams continued to struggle in front of goal as the scoreline remained 0-0 before the break.

Thailand could have found the back of the net after the restart when Saowalak Pengngam kindly played Nutwadee Pram-nak on the edge of the box, but the midfield effort was easily stopped by Davies-McDaniel.

Although reduced to counter attacks, the Philippines had two clear chances just after the hour mark with Quinley Quezada and Chandler McDaniel failing to find the target from inside the box .

The Philippines, however, finally broke the deadlock through McDaniel in the 81st minute when the striker from 20 yards out saw Boonsing failing to hold the ball as he crossed the goal line.

The Philippines will look for their second straight victory when they face Australia on Monday, as Thailand meet Indonesia.
