Tech opens 2022 campaign against William & Mary

NOIRSBOURG – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team opens the 2022 regular season by traveling to William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. on Thursday, August 18 for a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m. Thursday’s game will be broadcast live on FloSports.

TOP MARKS FOR THE HOKIES
Season opening: Virginia Tech is 5-5-0 against William & Mary, having won the last two games against the Griffins. The Hokies are 18-7-3 in the opening games of the season, having won eight of their last 10 season openers (8-1-1). The Hokies last beat Liberty in the 2021 season opener with a 3-0 shutout.

Griffin Campaign: William and Mary finished their 2021 season with a 4-9-3 record overall, winning two of their last 10 games. The Griffins started the 2022 preseason with a 2-1 win over Richmond and a 1-1 draw against George Mason. The Griffins are returning senior goaltender Zoe Doughty. Doughty was named the 2021 CAA Goalkeeper of the Year after saving 93.2% of shots and averaging 5.71 saves per game.

Eyes on the prize: Virginia Tech is determined to play in the program’s 13th NCAA tournament this fall. The Hokies return with star-studded talent, including leading scorer, Tori Powell (15 goals, 40 points). Powell became the 11e program player to score a hat trick, first against a five-power opponent. Emma Pelkowski had 8 assists in 2021 and tied for the fifth-best single-season assist mark in program history. Starting 36 of 36 games in his career, Alia Skinner brings her back to the field as the primary goaltender for the Hokies. Skinner saw over 3,100 minutes of play and made 156 saves (0.776%). Newcomer Taylor Prize led the team in pre-season goals, scoring twice in the first scrum of the year.

• The Hokies will open Thompson Field on Sunday August 21 for their Welcome Home Hokies game against Indiana. The first 200 students to arrive early for Sunday’s game at noon will receive a free Hokies t-shirt.
