The Falconets kick off their campaign on a winning note and beat France

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, began their campaign for FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup honors in Costa Rica on a winning note, beating France by a single goal in their Group D opener on Friday morning.

The Falconets goal came in the 85th minute of play when Flourish Sabastine got a through pass to give away Nigeria a narrow 1-0 win over France at the National Stadium in San Jose.

The game was suspended in the 20th minute by the Mexican referee Francia Gonzalez due to a heavy downpour.

However, after the match resumed, it was France who almost broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute on a dangerous corner, the Falconets goalkeeper misjudging the ball’s trajectory but the defense cleared their line.

The Falconets almost conceded in the 39th minute following a scramble in the mouth of the net, but a timely block from a Falconet saved the day before from the rebound was cleared to safety.

Nigeria’s Esther Onyenezide attempted a long left-footed shot in the 54th minute, but it was saved well by the French keeper.

France saw their goal in the 81st minute canceled after consultation with VAR, for a foul on the Falconets goalkeeper.

With just five minutes to go, the Falconets broke the deadlock, as Flourish Sabastine ran on a through pass from Idoko before blasting past the French keeper.

Nigeria will now face South Korea in their second Group D clash on Sunday.
